Vitamins: you can not live without them, it is safe. The question is: Where do you get them? In the" good old days "(which were in your grandparents generation, but perhaps much further back than that) We have our vitamins and other nutrition from totally natural sources: the sun, the water we drink and the food we eat.

Today, and this is no secret we live and what we drink, just do not pack the same punch as in the good old days. There are many reasons, and I do not want to write a thesis on it. But for example, many of us our food from the soil that is not as rich as they are used. And the many chemicals that are used for most of the food we are eating May degradation of food even further, or at least some unneeded poisons in our diet. And it often comes from far away, from where we live, it may have lost some of the nutrient content on the way here.

So what should we do? Well, a common approach to vitamins. This view also has supporters and critics.

Recently, after the Seattle Times, a former detractor of this approach has its sight.

They note that "the American Medical Association (AMA) is advising all adults, at least one multi-vitamin per day - a reversal of the duration of anti-vitamin policy."

Your policy has it seems, because of advances in research on the effect of vitamins. It now appears that people who have enough vitamins have a lower risk for several common chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis.

Perhaps their change to the view that the American public. For example, 20 years ago, the AMA only promoted vitamin supplement for pregnant women and those who are chronically ill.

I remember when I was younger, that there are some multi-vitamins on the market and some other vitamins and dietary supplements also, but they were not your common tariff. And when I began to Health Food Stores, I ran into a whole flood of vitamins strange that I certainly never heard of the biology classes.

But now, for example, the value of folic acid in prevention of some birth defects and heart diseases.

Who ever of folic acid 20 or 30 years?

Of course, it is not only that food is now less nutrition, but also that we are not so aware of the concern for our own food and how they affect health. The AMA says that nearly 80 percent of Americans do not eat the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, to essential nutrients.

If this is the case, then we need to get our vitamins and minerals from somewhere. And it seems that vitamin supplements are now available to researchers and doctors who should know about these things.

Another thing that scientists learn more about is that our recommended daily intake for vitamins need to be reviewed.

Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg, of Tuft's University's Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging that nutrition experts are concerned that the recommended daily intake of many vitamins are too low. RDAs originally to prevent symptoms of vitamin deficiency diseases. But evidence is growing that higher levels of many vitamins are necessary for optimal health.

And, as we know, if these vitamins from our food, we need it from somewhere, such as vitamin supplements.

Dr. Robert Fletcher of Harvard University agrees. It shows that many of us thought when we were growing up, that an adequate diet would take care of our vitamin needs. "But," he says, "the new evidence ... is that vitamins also prevent the usual diseases we deal with every day, (like) heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis and birth defects."

However, experts and others of us with common sense, do not forget that vitamins are a supplement to our diet. They do not replace a balanced diet. So, in any case, eat a balanced diet, but if you want to lower your risk for common chronic diseases of today, it would also be useful to maintain a good multi-vitamin supplement to your diet.
