Singapore is a cosmopolitan country and its population consists of Chinese, Malays, Indians and others such as the Eurasians. In this heterogeneous, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-cultural society, the perception of diseases, medical treatment and health beliefs are expected to be varied. The fact that this diversity of population, such as the various ethnic groups to celebrate their own cultures intermingle, while with another, between people of different backgrounds and different sexes. According to Helman (1994) the rules as the basis for the organization of a society in which way and it symbolizes, are all part of this society culture.Helman (1994) also observed that culture to a certain extent, may be regarded as " "inherited lens" through which the individual perceives and understands the world in which he lives and learns to live. The "inherited lens" "we have different perspectives on how human health and disease, and affects the nature how they respond to symptoms. It is also about the "inherited lens" that a patient determines how he is looking for healthcare.
A Singapore minister Yeo, G. (2001) had clearly pointed out that cultures are constantly, and are constantly in competition with each other. Although the political correctness requires us to believe that all cultures are equal, but in reality, to achieve equality in the cultures is an absurd allegation. Both the cultural understanding and the structure of the health care system, so an important role in the provision of health and disease. With the understanding of the relevant health beliefs, we will be the development of culturally sensitive health promotion programs (Lee et al., 1993).
While culture can be influenced by other social variables such as gender, class and age, other personal experiences to a person who answers on health beliefs. As health care professionals, we need to make sure that patients from certain cultural backgrounds are not stereotypical.
Chinese settlement took place in Singapore from the mid 19th Century, with most people from southeastern China (Singapore Chinese Physicians' Association, nd). Early migrants left China because of wars, floods, famines and poverty, and found work at the Singapore port.
In the last 20 years, Chinese immigrants came from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam and elsewhere in Indochina. Recently, they came from People's Republic of China (PRC), and these immigrants speak Mandarin and other Chinese dialects. They bring their own culture, and now have to integrate into a new culture. Before 1965, most Chinese immigrants were Class (Chang, 1999) and recently we have seen more skilled immigrants into Singapore.
