Would you be surprised to learn that you can protect your heart by the better quality dietary supplements than by the cholesterol-lowering drugs? This is the message of a book entitled" Cholesterol Conspiracy "Written by Ladd McNamara, MD, a board-certified physician and expert on nutritional medicine. In his 85-page book with 167 references Dr. McNamara explains that most people affected by heart disease have normal cholesterol! The most common form of heart disease today is atherosclerosis (clogged arteries damaged, possibly due to plaque formation).
Cardiovascular disease kills 725,000 Americans a year - it's the # 1 killer in the U.S. today. An early idea was that cholesterol is the culprit for this disease. Dr. Ladd McNamara examines the history:
* Years ago the idea was that, in order to reduce the risk of heart disease throughout the cholesterol required to be kept under 200 - it is not the risk of heart disease.
* The recommendation also modified to measure the relationship between "good" cholesterol (HDL) and "bad" cholesterol (LDL). The initial recommendations of LDL-130, was then lowered to 100 (in 2001) and further reduced to 70 (July 2004). These drugs are big business: About $ 16 billion profit in 2003. The last drops of doubling the number of people who are candidates for cholesterol-lowering drugs.
* Pharmaceutical companies spend a lot of money to influence the public and physicians that these drugs are necessary, and try to suppress scientific information concerning the important role that vitamins and minerals play - Dr. Ladd McNamara compares this behavior with the tobacco industry in the past.
Dr. Ladd McNamara argues convincingly that there is no scientific evidence supporting the prescription of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs to a steadily growing number of people, and that there is a much more effective solution.
* Studies show that heart disease is caused by oxidized LDL. To understand, think Oxidation by a rusty piece of metal. If you prevent the oxidation (via antioxidants, ie, vitamins), the LDL is not involved in the arterial walls and plaques.
* Homocysteine is a substance in our body that oxidized LDL and the vessel wall. The oxidized LDL-C-reactive protein releases (CRP), a strong indicator of the inflammation of the arteries. The homocysteine levels can be reduced by, for example, vitamin B family.
The recommendation is very cautious about the use of cholesterol-lowering medications, which can damage the liver, reduce the quantities of a critical enzyme (Co-Q10), responsible for energy production in every cell (especially in the heart!) And has many other negative side effects. Instead, it is recommended to ensure a high quality dietary supplements, and keep from oxidized LDL. You can also ask your physician for your homocysteine level (should be below 6.5) and CRP.

Stephie Althouse is a Ph.D. Chemist in research and development for 16 years and is the recipient of several prestigious awards. Approx. 2.5 years, she was very interested in cellular nutrition, ie, the field that deals with the right nutrients to every cell in our body for optimum health to prevent chronic and degenerative diseases, slow aging . She has counceled many people to improve their health through the establishment of a high-quality nutritional supplement program to meet their needs, and recommendations for a healthier diet and physical activity. Dr. Althouse works closely with physicians who are experts in nutritional medicine - unfortunately this is still a rare combination. The philosophy of these doctors is not anti-drug or anti-surgery, but they recognize that much can be achieved by placing the food first.
