Positive thinking has been unduly criticized at times for the right to order more than they can deliver. It is not everything, but then what else can?
An Irish banker, Dermot O'Connor, has recently demonstrated clearly the power of positive thinking. I've used it in conversation with Gloria Hunniford, the host of the "Heaven and Earth" show, on BBC 1 on the 30th July 2006.
8 years, Dermot was a high flying banker to the development of Dublin. He was used to travel around the world and, literally, had the world at his feet.
But one morning he went to work and call an urgent undertaking. He began talking with slurred language on the phone like a drunken man
Everyone in the office began to laugh. They thought that he is drinking the night before.
In the next few weeks, he discovered that he had an aggressive form of multiple sclerosis. He had two attacks in two months. His life fell apart.
He died almost at the time of diagnosis after a lot of people. The doctors told him he could not be cured, and that his life would change dramatically and immediately.
He continued to take what he could from conventional medicine, but to help from other sources as well.
"" What you think you have to do something, as well as the acceptance of traditional medicine, they believe in? "Asked Gloria Hunniford.
"The time of diagnosis was a very hard time for me," replied Dermot.
"" The Chinese say: "Where the mind goes the body eventually follows." I was told about all these terrible things that might happen, for me, and at first I felt worse every day.
"" I turned to a positive mental techniques including NLP and mental techniques from the East, just because I wanted to survive this condition mentally, but only to cope mentally, I was surprised at some of my symptoms to dissipate.
"" Because my mind thought my legs go to my bladder is weaker and weaker, I had this kind of ritual, daily life, where I stand and test the strength of my legs and my vision, to see if my vision was to change.
"" Every day I would like to think I was getting worse, but because of technology I was using, I was now feeling that I always stronger physically in every respect.
"" After about 8 months, my symptoms had disappeared! ""
Dermot knew of course that remission is possible with MS, but is of the opinion:
"" You must actively participate in order to stay in remission. ""
Gloria Hunniford the beautiful daughter, Caron Keating, had cancer for 7 years before she died at the age of 41st Gloria believes that positive thinking helped prolong her life:
Caron lived by the book "The Power of Now", ie life in the time and the really positive the whole time.
Gloria described what they talked about: "We never talked about death - only about the life and I believe that positive thinking can be life .... but each of the cellular make is different and everyone reacts differently. It can not be a model for all
Dermot continued: "I do not believe that positive thinking can cure all diseases, but with a multi-dimensional approach that allows you to doctors to treat your illness.
"" There are many skills with. Just like an Olympic athlete, you are not on your coach to win the gold medal for you. They have an optimal diet and exercise and a sports psychologist to you.
"" It is not easy for the coach and say: "I want to win the gold medal. I will try next month to see how I do." They go through a process and an aspect that would have a positive attitude .
"" Say "positive attitude" is a bit like saying football is a ball come. It is an acquired skill and is a lot of techniques that we go through in the book. "
Dermot has written a book about his experiences as "The Healing Code"
"" MS opened my awareness to many different things. A large part of things in the book - all that stuff - has been scientifically verified. ""
Dr. Mark Hamilton attended the hearing, which at least one from the perspective of orthodox medicine. He agreed with all of Dermot O'Connor's views:
"" I see no conflict. Positive thinking seems to be working alongside conventional medicine. The NHS is the doctor or the trainer, but it is up to you, your education forward. Regardless of the diagnosis is, happy people have to live longer. Doctors would be foolish to ignore.
Gloria commented: "I like the word" complementary "rather than" alternative "medicine." "
You have the feeling that Dermot O'Connor had some far-reaching demands on the first page of his book that may not apply to everyone.
Dermot admitted: "It is not the immortality code - no book can tell you, like all diseases, in order to survive - if you look at people like Lance Armstrong, the back, where the opposition is stacked against them are rare, it is simply a miracle .
"" There are more things take place and more responsibility to the person. Of course, if people try to bring all these things they still can not. ""
Dr. Mark Hamilton has his point of view again: "Conventional doctors are looking in other areas and add to what conventional medicine has to offer.
"" I do not believe that anyone goes to their doctor to say that what we know will do everything to heal. What we can do, has limitations. I think that complementary medicine alongside conventional medicine. I see no conflict. "
Gloria with the interview with a question to the audience:
"" Do you agree with Dermot, that we all have within us the power and positive thinking to change our lives and help us from a disease or should we just stick with conventional medicine and let the doctors do their work? ""
Some years after his diagnosis, Dermot is in the best health of his life. He has changed from dark despair to a bright and energetic proponent of positive thinking and multi-dimensional healing. He believes that what he can help others as well. .
It was refreshing to hear the views of a doctor open as Dr. Mark Hamilton. There is no need for "either or". It is for every need "also, and".
Conventional and complementary medicine can give us two strings to our bow and our chances of mental and physical survival.
If we mix the positive thinking, we are not guaranteed success, but certainly a much better chance to achieve our health goals.
The second important lesson is, apart from positive thinking, arising from Dermot history. He has the responsibility for his own health. He has not only to the doctor to heal him.
Responsibility for our own health is not a burden, but a relief. It is something we can do apart from sitting in waiting rooms and consulting a physician for an average of ten minutes. We could even have the experience to find out what good health.
We can have multiple systems for us and decide for ourselves who is best for us.
I found the whole interview in a refreshing change from the usual battle between conventional and complementary medicine and am relieved to think that I take responsibility for my own health.
