A problem with diagnostic tests is that they often lead to unnecessary medical procedures, including surgery. In 1978 the U.S. Office of Technology Assessment estimated that only 10% to 20% of medical procedures proved to patients. As much as 80% to 90% of the treatments can be good medical sense, but are without scientific proof.

It was estimated that up to 30% of the value of most applications is due to the placebo effect. (A placebo is a pharmaceutically empty pill or medical procedure that patients believe is an effective treatment, but actually is not.) In other words, many people with certain health conditions better, even if they are dummy treatments, if they together with their physician believe in their effectiveness. Medical archives are filled with examples of treatments that cured patients at the time only at a later date, proved ineffective.

For example, some early treatment of herpes infections had positive results in 85% of patients, although later studies found that these treatments are not effective. It is possible that the "faith" in some tests, procedures, or treatments is more important than the procedure itself. Some experts suggest that because of the placebo effect can heal, patients should demand less and less invasive measures eager to accept risky experimental procedures. This is one reason many people are always interested in non-medical alternative healing methods.

So if you need for a physical examination, you can specify which tests you are willing to be subjected to by asking the right questions:

What do you expect to find? They should deal with the question why you need the test. How is it going to facilitate a diagnosis? You need to ask about alternatives and the disadvantage of waiting and no test. Sometimes the best test is the test of time. Consent to a test, because it's routine is not a satisfactory explanation.

What risks are associated with the examination? No risk test is free, so you should potential benefits and risks.

A problem with the tests is that they are not 100% accurate. An inaccurate result can lead to an incorrect diagnosis. A false positive can occur when a test incorrectly reveals an anomaly. This is a test shows "positive"-a disease exists when it really does not exist. This often provokes unnecessary anxiety that some people feel, and even sick. Conversely, normal results do not necessarily indicate good health. False negative results may occur in the test results indicate normality, even if a person is sick. This is a test shows "negative" "no disease exists if they are actually present. These results may lead to a false sense of health and can make the urgently needed treatment at critical stages of the disease.

Statistically speaking, test results are accurate to about 95% of the population. So 5% of patients can be expected that a false positive or false negative on all laboratory tests. Other factors that may cause error test certain drugs, exercise, stress, diet, time of day, and errors in the handling or processing specimens.

Another problem with tests is that they may be related to the physical risks. Some of the most common risks are infection, bleeding, damage to vital structures, and reactions to anesthesia, drugs, and contrast dye materials.

What are the options after the test? If a test is positive, then what? If none of the options is plausible for you, why have the test administered? If it is impossible to treat a disease that a test shows that the test is not justified. The diagnosis of the diseases to be treated, on the other hand, usually justify the test.
