In bodybuilding circles, the debate over how much protein athletes need each day has raged since man picked up weights. We know that protein is important for building new muscle, and that it is an absolute basis for athletes. Most people they represent, from 75 to 1.0 grams per pound of body weight. That would mean a 200-pound person would need 150 to 200 grams of protein per day.
Most strength coaches, bodybuilders, personal trainers and would vehemently dispute this figure. Competitive bodybuilder (High Intermediate to Advanced) consume at least 1.5 to 2.0 grams of protein daily per pound of body weight. This would be the daily needs for a 200-pound bodybuilder at 300 to 400 grams per day. This is the most common use for strength athletes.
It should be noted that these figures are based on the general consensus of the weight. There is no scientific conclusion on this issue. It is known that a point, maybe 3 grams of protein per pound of body weight, the body begins to feel the damage caused by the excess protein. If you have a genetic predisposition to kidney disease, the additional workload can be and probably is the disease. If you are a healthy adult, the protein should have no problem.
Like all things in life, moderation is the key. Two grams of protein per body weight is a good, safe instructions for bodybuilding. One gram per pound is probably not enough and three grams per pound you in danger. The 200-pound athlete should consume 300 to 400 grams of protein daily. The goal of bodybuilding is to improve quality of life, and 2.0 grams of protein will certainly do so. Since the long-term effects of 3.0 g or more per pound of body weight are not yet known, it is often better to be on the safe side, and follow the traditional numbers, which showed to be safe.
